Device 2
or
“Device to regulate the flow of
excessive information we are subjected to”
The second device is much more compact and self-contained.
It is also the only one that appears ready for the shops, complete with packaging and what appears be advertising to be printed on newspapers or magazines.
There are ten pairs of what is best described as goggles; the shape is reminiscent of protective goggles, for welding or even like early pilot goggles, but instead of the lenses, there are irises made of that can be open or closed by rotating the outer frame.
The eyepieces are made of a solid piece of wood, that houses the iris mechanism.
It looks like the wooden eyepieces can be customized for the wearer; of the ten pairs available, seven show the same profile, two have a different profile, one deeper and one shallower, and then there is one pair where the eyepiece still have a whole conical shape, ready to be cut following a custom profile.
However there are some details that make me wonder if these were part of a production run, or samples that never saw the light of the day. The hardware varies; and there are small differences between the pairs, in some both irises open clockwise, in some counter-clockwise, and in the others they open in opposite direction.
Some of the sketches point at a synchronization mechanism, that does not appear to be have been implemented in this version.
There’s a lot of documentation to accompany these, but unfortunately the most of it is unreadable. I have no idea if it was the travel through the microwave that ruined it or if it was already that way when it was sent, in the hope that it would be possible to reconstruct it later. There are images of measuring tools, including an interesting sketch of what could be used to measure and reproduce the profile of the wearer. This indicates a wish to set up a form of customization, and I wish it had come through with the goggles.
There’s also a variety of anatomical images, especially brains and eyes. I imagine it is part of the background research carried out to develop this item, but unfortunately it is inaccessible.
